Set the plastic liner aside. Dig out the area with a shovel and place the plastic liner in the hole to check the fit. Remove the liner and dig deeper, if needed. Dig the hole at least 2 inches deeper than needed. Cover the bottom of the hole with 2 to 3 inches of sand. Position the pond liner in the hole and place a level across the center, resting on the edges.
